Can I Install an EV Charger Before My Supply Is Unlooped?
Sometimes, yes. Being scheduled for unlooping does not automatically mean that an EV charger has to remain unusable until every piece of network work is finished. Government research published in 2026 found that some Distribution Network Operators allow a low-carbon technology to connect before unlooping happens later. Load management can also be used in some circumstances to keep demand within an accepted limit. But this is not something the homeowner or installer can simply assume. DNO approaches differ, and the proposed arrangement must be accepted for the specific connection.

Why can installation sometimes go ahead first?
A looped supply does not have one fixed amount of spare capacity that applies to every street.
The DNO assesses the shared service, the properties connected to it, existing loads and the proposed low-carbon technology.
DESNZ found that DNOs currently use different strategies.
One DNO estimated that more than 90% of first low-carbon-technology installations on a loop could be accommodated without unlooping first, sometimes alongside another service intervention.
That figure must not be turned into:
"90% of UK looped homes can install a charger immediately."
It was one DNO's estimate and the report explicitly documents different practices elsewhere.

What does load limiting do?
A load-management system can reduce the EV charger's power when total demand approaches the limit set for the installation.
For example, a charger capable of around 7kW does not necessarily need to operate at maximum output throughout every charging session.
If other household demand rises, an appropriately designed system may reduce EV charging demand. When more capacity becomes available, charging can increase again within its configured limits.
The government's response to the Electricity Distribution Networks Study specifically identifies load-limiting devices as a possible alternative to immediate service-cable replacement in some cases.
This is an installation design, not a DIY setting.
Do not increase commissioned limits yourself.

Will load limiting make charging too slow?
Not necessarily.
The relevant question is how much energy the vehicle needs before it next leaves.
Imagine, purely as an illustration, that charging were available at an average 3kW for ten hours overnight.
3kW × 10 hours = 30kWh supplied during that period before considering how actual charging power varies.
A driver who only needs to replace a normal day's energy may therefore still have ample time even when the charger cannot run at its full advertised capability continuously.
Do not assume that every interim arrangement will be 3kW. The permitted output depends on the actual installation.
You can calculate how long your EV would take to charge at a lower power.

What are owners reporting in practice?
Individual experiences, not national policy.
Recent UK community discussions show both outcomes.
In an April 2026 r/evchargingUK discussion, owners reported varying DNO timelines and one participant described being able to charge at reduced power while waiting for network work.
In August 2026 another owner said their charger had already been installed while the property awaited de-looping, with the DNO aware of the situation.
These accounts cannot establish whether another property will receive the same decision. They simply illustrate why "looped supply means absolutely no charging until unlooping" is too broad a statement.

What should I ask before letting the installation proceed?
Ask the installer to confirm in writing:
- whether the DNO knows the supply is looped;
- whether installation has been approved;
- whether a temporary demand limit applies;
- what realistic charging power to expect;
- whether unlooping is still planned;
- and what event allows the temporary restriction to be removed.
If there is no clear answer about DNO approval, do not treat a forum post about another household as permission for your own installation.

What if the DNO says unlooping must happen first?
Then the next issue becomes the network programme rather than the charger hardware.
Do not buy a more powerful charger or alter the existing installation in an attempt to bypass that decision.
