There is currently no universal service guarantee that lets HomeChargeLab say:

"your property will be unlooped within X weeks."

What can make unlooping take longer?

DESNZ identifies several factors:

• the type of driveway or surface;
• extent of civil works;
• permissions;
• traffic management;
• contractor availability;
• neighbouring-property involvement;
• network configuration.

A straightforward service alteration and a job requiring substantial excavation across several properties are clearly not the same project.

Some DNOs are experimenting with techniques and proactive street-level programmes to reduce disruption and make work more efficient.

Can neighbour issues delay the work?

They can.

The DESNZ report says disputes involving neighbours can extend an unlooping case to six months, a year or sometimes longer.

However, do not imply that neighbour disputes are normal.

Among consumers in the study who had actually undergone unlooping, fewer than 5% reported uncooperative neighbours.

The same research found that around 7% reported significant disruption to neighbours.

So neighbour problems can have a disproportionate impact when they occur, but the survey does not suggest that most unlooping projects collapse into driveway warfare.

Will my driveway have to be dug up?

Possibly, but the scope depends on the service route.

Full unlooping often requires a new service cable between the local network and one or more affected meter positions.

The government research says this frequently involves groundworks to front gardens, paths or driveways.

Current DNO programmes also demonstrate that excavation and subsequent reinstatement can form part of the job.

But do not promise a particular excavation method from an online article. The DNO needs to survey the actual route.

Can I get my charger while I am waiting?

Sometimes.

The 2026 DESNZ study documents DNO approaches where a low-carbon technology is allowed to connect and the unlooping is scheduled later.

Other cases may use load limiting.

Other DNO/property combinations may require the network work first.

How can I avoid unnecessary delays?

The homeowner cannot control network engineering schedules, but incomplete information can create avoidable friction.

When the installer asks for:

• property information;
• meter details;
• photographs of accessible service equipment;
• proposed chargepoint information;

provide accurate information promptly.

Ask for the DNO/application reference and find out which stage is actually outstanding.

"Waiting for the charger" can mean very different things: installer survey pending; DNO assessment pending; site survey pending; permissions pending; contractor date pending; physical works pending.

A precise status is more useful than repeatedly asking for a generic ETA.
