Can I Install an EV Charger on a Looped Electricity Supply?

Yes, you may be able to install an EV charger on a looped electricity supply, but the answer depends on what your Distribution Network Operator approves for the actual connection. A looped supply means that two or more properties share part of the electricity service cable connecting them to the local network. It does not mean that you share an electricity meter or bill with your neighbour. The issue becomes important when a large new electrical load such as a home EV charger is added. The shared service may have enough capacity for the proposed installation, the charger may need load limiting, or the DNO may decide that the properties should be unlooped. This is not an obscure problem. Research published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in January 2026 produced a central estimate of about 3.9 million looped household connections in Great Britain, roughly 14% of household connections. Because DNO records and estimation methods vary, the report gives an approximate range of 3.1-4.7 million, or around 11-17%. So discovering that your home is looped does not mean that something is uniquely wrong with your property. It means the network connection needs to be considered as part of the charger installation.

Can a looped supply support a home EV charger?

Potentially.

There is no national rule saying that every looped home must be unlooped before any EV charger can operate.

The 2026 DESNZ research found different approaches across Distribution Network Operators. Depending on the network and the individual connection, a DNO may allow the new low-carbon technology to connect, use an interim load-management arrangement, or arrange network work before or after installation.

One DNO told researchers that more than 90% of first low-carbon-technology installations on a loop could be accommodated without unlooping first. Treat that figure carefully: it describes one DNO's experience, not a national approval rate. Other DNOs reported different approaches, including a stronger preference for unlooping.

The practical question is therefore not simply whether the property is looped. It is whether the proposed charger and the complete demand on the shared service can be accepted by the responsible DNO.

Why does an EV charger make a looped supply important?

Many looped services were installed when household electricity demand was considerably lower than it is today.

DESNZ found that looped connections are commonly associated with terraced and semi-detached properties and some smaller detached homes, particularly housing dating from roughly the 1950s to the early 1990s. The pattern is not universal, and looped supplies can occur outside those categories.

A typical single-phase home charger in the 7kW class can represent a substantial sustained load. The network assessment therefore has to consider more than whether the lights and appliances in the house currently work without difficulty.

On a looped connection, part of the service infrastructure is shared with another property or properties. Existing and proposed low-carbon technologies across that loop can therefore matter to the capacity assessment.

What can happen after the DNO assesses the connection?

These are examples, not an approval matrix.

The 2026 government response to the Electricity Distribution Networks Study explicitly says unlooping may not always be necessary. It gives load-limiting devices and smart charging as potential alternatives in some circumstances.

However, this does not mean a homeowner can decide independently to reduce the charger setting and bypass the network process. The installer must follow the applicable connection process and the DNO must have the information needed to assess its network.

Does a looped supply mean my neighbour and I share electricity?

No.

The shared element is part of the service connection infrastructure.

It does not mean your neighbour's electricity consumption is being recorded by your meter or that you share an electricity account.

The concern is the capacity and configuration of the network assets serving the properties.

That distinction matters because homeowners sometimes discover a loop only when they request an EV charger, heat pump or another significant new electrical load. Nothing about their existing electricity bill necessarily announces that the supply is looped.

Do I always have to wait for unlooping?

What should I do after being told the supply is looped?

If a looped service has already been identified, DESNZ's 2026 research says the normal 'connect and notify' route is not permitted for that case. The installer therefore needs to follow the appropriate DNO application and approval process before the chargepoint is connected.

Ask the installer for the current status of the DNO application rather than immediately cancelling the charger or paying for unrelated electrical upgrades.

Ask them to confirm:

  • which DNO is responsible;
  • whether the supply has been confirmed as looped;
  • whether the proposed charger has been accepted;
  • whether a load limit applies;
  • whether unlooping is required;

Do not alter the service equipment or charger settings yourself to try to avoid the connection process.
