EV Charging Without a Driveway UK: Your Practical Options
You can run an EV without a driveway, but the charging plan needs to work where you actually park. A nearby charger on a map is only useful if you can reach it, use the connector and leave the car for the permitted time. Compare a normal week of charging before committing to equipment or assuming that a cable can cross the pavement outside your home.

Start with places you already visit
List charging near home, work and regular destinations. Check opening hours, parking restrictions, the required cable, payment methods and the operator's current price. A charger at a workplace is not necessarily open to the public, and a supermarket charger may have a parking time limit.
Visit likely locations at the time you would use them. Notice whether bays are occupied, whether the route feels usable after dark and how far you would walk home. Keep a second practical option in case your preferred charger is unavailable.
Understand on-street charging
Street charging can include lamp-post, bollard and standalone units. Equipment, output and payment arrangements vary. Do not assume that every lamp-post charger supplies 7kW or costs less than every rapid charger. Check the actual operator information and signs.
A lower-power connection can work well when the vehicle is legitimately parked for several hours. It is less useful if a parking restriction requires you to return quickly. Consider the combined charging and parking cost, including any overstay charge.

Get permission before planning a pavement crossing
Government guidance for England discusses authorised cross-pavement solutions, including channels. It does not give every householder permission to install one. Ask the responsible highways authority what is allowed at your exact address; arrangements differ across authorities and UK nations.
A cable protector, channel or overhead arm does not itself grant a right to occupy the highway or reserve the adjacent bay. Resolve permission, installation, maintenance and accessibility requirements before ordering. Never cut into a public pavement yourself.

Build a weekly energy and cost estimate
As a worked example, 120 miles at an assumed 4 miles/kWh uses 30kWh of battery energy. At an assumed 90% charging efficiency, that needs about 33.3kWh from the supply. At a hypothetical VAT-inclusive 50p/kWh, the energy costs £16.67 before parking or session fees.
Replace those assumptions with your own consumption and local prices. Estimate separately for slower routine charging and occasional rapid charging. If a subscription offers a lower unit rate, calculate whether the saving on your realistic monthly usage exceeds the fee.
Decide whether the routine is dependable
Test the proposed charging week before relying on it for an early commute. Account for carrying a cable, collecting the car and availability when demand is high. The cheapest advertised option may be inconvenient enough that you seldom use it.
If an approved home-to-street solution is feasible, compare its full installed and ongoing cost with your public plan. If it is not feasible, that does not automatically rule out an EV; it means your purchase decision should use the prices and access conditions you can actually obtain.
