Charging an EV Overnight in the UK
Overnight EV charging works well when the time the car is parked overlaps with enough available charging power. It is not automatically cheaper simply because it is dark: the price depends on your electricity contract. Start with the energy you need for tomorrow, then align the car, chargepoint and tariff settings so they deliver that top-up reliably.

Work backwards from tomorrow's journeys
You rarely need a full empty-to-full charge. Record the distance you expect to drive and use recent consumption from your own vehicle to estimate the energy needed. Keep a margin for a detour, poor weather or an unexpected journey instead of aiming for the smallest possible battery percentage.
For an illustrative 40-mile day at 4 miles per kWh, driving uses about 10kWh. At an assumed 90% charging efficiency, replacing it requires about 11.1kWh from the supply. A steady 7kW connection would take roughly 1.6 hours. These are planning assumptions, not a range prediction for any particular car.
Check whether the charging window is long enough
Multiply the usable hours by the power actually available to the car. A four-hour window at 7kW provides up to 28kWh of input energy, or approximately 25.2kWh stored under the example's 90% assumption. Load management, battery conditioning and pauses may reduce that amount.
If a trip needs more than the cheap window can supply, decide deliberately whether to charge partly at the higher rate or use another charging opportunity. Do this before bedtime. A schedule that refuses all charging outside the cheap period can leave you short of the target on an unusually busy driving day.
Read the tariff rather than copying a clock setting
Find the exact unit rates, eligible times, standing charge and contract conditions on your own quotation. A time-of-use tariff with a fixed cheap window differs from a service that directly controls compatible charging equipment. A car timer alone does not establish eligibility for a managed charging tariff.
Compare the annual household bill, including daytime consumption. In a hypothetical example, moving 200kWh of charging from 25p to 10p saves £30, but paying 5p more on 400kWh of other consumption adds £20. Before standing-charge differences, the net saving is £10. Choose one main scheduling controller
A car timer, a wallbox timer and an energy supplier can each delay charging. If their permitted times do not overlap, the car may remain plugged in without receiving energy. Follow the supplier's setup instructions and decide which system controls the start and stop times.
Run a short supervised test after changing settings. Confirm the car is connected, the intended charge limit is selected and a future session is scheduled. On the first normal overnight session, check the resulting charging log the next morning. Test again when clocks change or you alter tariffs.
Use the charge limit for your vehicle
Avoid applying a universal 80% or 100% rule to every EV. Tesla, for example, directs owners to the recommended limit displayed for their installed battery. Other brands have their own guidance. Follow the instructions for the actual vehicle and battery rather than a generic social-media rule.
A departure schedule may also prepare the cabin or battery. Allow for that energy use when comparing the chargepoint log with the battery percentage gained. A small difference between electricity delivered and energy stored is not, by itself, proof of a meter problem.

Make overnight charging a repeatable routine
Use correctly installed equipment in accordance with its instructions. Keep the cable route clear and stop using damaged equipment. This article is about scheduled charging with a suitable setup; it does not endorse leaving an unassessed household socket under continuous load.
If charging fails, check the status messages in the car and charger before changing several settings at once. Note whether the session was waiting for a schedule, had reached its limit or reported a fault.
