Tethered vs Untethered EV Chargers UK: Which Is Best?
A tethered charger has an attached charging lead; an untethered, or socketed, charger takes a separate compatible cable. The best choice depends on how you park and how often you want to handle that lead. Neither format automatically charges faster, prevents theft or guarantees compatibility with every future vehicle.

What changes in daily use?
With a tethered unit, the cable is already at the wallbox. You take it from its holder, connect it to the car and put it away afterwards. That can be convenient for a daily commuter, especially if retrieving a separate cable means unloading a busy boot.
A socketed unit lets you remove the lead when the charger is idle. You may prefer the appearance or want to use a suitable detachable lead elsewhere. Consider where a wet cable will be stored and whether carrying the same cable between home and public posts will become inconvenient.
Measure the route to the charging port
Do not assume that a commonly advertised cable length will reach in every parking position. Measure the route the cable would actually take, allowing slack and avoiding walking routes, doors and vehicle wheels. Repeat the check with the car facing the other way and, if relevant, a second vehicle.
With a socketed unit, a different compatible cable can change the reach, but it still needs suitable current and phase ratings and must comply with the equipment instructions. An EV extension or improvised adaptor is not the same thing as choosing the correct complete lead.
Cable format is separate from charging power
Compare the supported power of the specific products, the installation and your vehicle's AC limit. A 7kW tethered wallbox and an appropriately configured 7kW socketed wallbox do not have an inherent speed difference just because one cable detaches.

Compare complete costs and repair arrangements
Request like-for-like installed quotes. Include the separate cable if needed, any holder, the cable route, necessary electrical work and VAT. Do not assume that every socketed product is cheaper or that the same installation package covers two different models.
A detachable cable can be replaced separately when the fault is confined to that cable, but the wallbox socket can also develop faults. A tethered cable may be replaceable through the manufacturer's service process. Ask about parts, labour and call-out charges rather than assuming either format eliminates repair costs.
Think about access and storage
Check the product's documented locking and access controls. A permanently attached cable is not theft-proof, and a socketed unit may lock a lead during charging. Access restrictions can depend on settings, connectivity and the particular vehicle.
Choose a storage position that protects the connector and keeps the cable away from impact and trip hazards. If visitors may use the charger, explain the approved procedure and confirm their vehicle and lead are compatible. Do not infer support for an unfamiliar connector or future standard.
Which format is best for your home?
Choose tethered if an attached lead of the right length makes your everyday routine easier. Choose socketed if removing the cable or selecting a suitable separate lead solves a real layout problem. Both choices still require a competent installation and equipment appropriate to the property.
Before ordering, write down your normal parking orientation, required reach, whether you already own a suitable cable and who pays for a cable repair. These four answers usually make the decision clearer than a generic list declaring one format universally better.
