Planning home EV charging in Ireland means bringing together a suitable parking arrangement, the vehicle’s charging capability, an assessed electrical installation and the tariff you will use. Grants may affect the project, but they should not replace those basic checks. This guide explains the order of decisions, separates a private home from a shared apartment setting and works through a charging-cost example in euros without presenting an invented installation quote or supplier offer.

Start with the vehicle and your ordinary driving

Find the usable battery capacity and maximum AC charging rate for your exact vehicle variant. SEAI’s EV charging guidance explains that AC charging is commonly used at home and that charging capability varies between vehicles. The maximum advertised power of a chargepoint does not override the car’s limit. Ask the dealer to identify the relevant figures in the documentation if you are unsure.

Then describe your normal routine: daily distance, when the car arrives, when it leaves and how much charging happens elsewhere. A driver replenishing a small daily amount has a different requirement from someone returning nearly empty before an early departure. Model both the ordinary day and the demanding day instead of treating a complete empty-to-full charge as the only useful scenario.

Check the parking space and permissions

Consider the cable route and how the car will park before choosing the charger position. A location that looks tidy in a photograph may be awkward when a boot is open, a second car is present or someone needs to walk past. Write down these everyday constraints for the installer and keep accessible routes clear in the proposed layout.

If you do not control the parking space or the relevant electricity supply, identify the owner or management body that can approve work. For a rented property or shared car park, clarify who owns the equipment, who pays the electricity bill and what happens if the occupier changes. Those questions can materially change the arrangement even when the vehicle and charger are identical.

Use an assessed installation, not a generic shopping list

SEAI directs household installations to Safe Electric registered installers. Its Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant scheme also sets specific technical and documentation requirements. Ask the installer to assess the property and explain the intended work, rather than trying to diagnose supply suitability from the appearance of a meter box or a consumer unit.

When comparing quotations, use the same proposed location and describe the same expected use. Ask for the charger, labour, cable route, any additional electrical work and commissioning to be made clear. Confirm what is excluded and what documentation you receive. This guide does not give wiring instructions or certify that a particular house can support a particular power level.

Check the current SEAI scheme before committing

For grant support, use the official SEAI home charger scheme portal as the starting point, including the application process, eligible equipment and timing. Verify the approval requirements before arranging work. Do not rely on an older blog post’s grant amount or assume a charger qualifies because it is marketed as smart.

Keep grant eligibility separate from the electrical assessment and from the purchase decision. A technically suitable charger may still need a specific scheme check; an eligible product does not establish that every applicant or property qualifies. Apartments need a different set of questions

SEAI has a separate apartment charging grant scheme covering multi-unit developments. If your parking is managed collectively, begin with the management body and the existing charging arrangements rather than assuming a private-house process transfers directly. A shared system may involve infrastructure, access control and billing decisions beyond the individual chargepoint.

Ask who controls access, how consumption is allocated, what recurring costs apply and whether the system can accommodate other residents later. Request those terms in writing. The cheapest-looking hardware is not necessarily the most useful comparison if one option includes ongoing management and another leaves the building to arrange it separately.

Calculate a home charging session in euros

Use a hypothetical 60kWh usable battery going from 20% to 80%. The energy stored is 36kWh. At an assumed 90% charging efficiency, grid electricity is 40kWh. With an illustrative rate of €0.30/kWh, the session costs €12.00. At an illustrative €0.15/kWh, the same grid energy costs €6.00. Enter euros, not cents, in the calculator: 30 cents becomes 0.30. Use the VAT-inclusive price from your own electricity bill. The session calculation excludes daily standing charges, installation and any public charging. Keep these costs separate until you compare the full household budget, otherwise it becomes easy to count the same fixed charge more than once.

Compare the household bill, not only the charging session

If your tariff has different prices at different times, check how much of the planned top-up can happen during the cheaper period. At an illustrative 7kW input and 90% efficiency, four hours would add 25.2kWh to the battery in a constant-power model. That is less than the 36kWh top-up above, so part of the session would need more time or a different power assumption.

Include ordinary household use and standing charges when considering another tariff. The annual calculator labels distance in miles and efficiency in miles per kWh in both markets. If your records are in kilometres, convert them consistently: kilometres divided by 1.609344 gives miles. Do not enter kilometre figures into a miles-labelled field and compare the resulting bill as though the units matched.

Keep a simple project and handover record

Before proceeding, collect the vehicle specifications, installer quotation, permissions and any grant correspondence. After installation, retain commissioning and scheme documents and ask for a demonstration of normal charging, scheduling and the relevant controls. Record who to contact for equipment support and who is responsible for the installation warranty.

For the first few sessions, compare estimated time and electricity use with the available readings. Note what each reading measures and whether other household demand is included.
