EV VRT Relief and Company Car Tax Ireland 2026

Irish EV incentives can sound larger than the saving an individual actually receives when different tax measures are added together. VRT relief reduces a registration tax charge, motor tax is an annual ownership cost, and company car relief changes an employee's taxable benefit. This guide separates those calculations using official rules checked on 10 September 2026. It concerns the Republic of Ireland, where both terminology and tax treatment differ from the UK.

VRT relief is limited by the tax actually due

According to Revenue: electric vehicle VRT relief, qualifying battery-only series-production cars and relevant commercial vehicles registered within the stated 2026 window can receive VRT relief of up to €5,000. Full relief rules apply up to an Open Market Selling Price of €40,000, with tapering above €40,000 and below €50,000. Vehicles above €50,000 receive no relief.

The maximum is not a €5,000 cash payment for every EV. If the VRT before relief is smaller, the relief cannot create a cash surplus. Revenue applies qualifying relief during registration and its calculator incorporates it. Use the live guidance for the precise registration deadline and boundary treatment, especially when delivery or an import is close to year-end.

Distinguish OMSP from the price you negotiated

Revenue uses Open Market Selling Price, or OMSP, in the registration-tax assessment. A seller's discounted invoice is not automatically the same number. This matters particularly when comparing an import with a locally supplied vehicle: apparently similar advertised prices may not include the same taxes or registration costs.

Request a complete landed and registered cost estimate before committing to an import. Ask which amounts are confirmed and which depend on Revenue's assessment. Keep the purchase invoice, transport cost and registration assumptions separate. If the seller uses a maximum relief figure in advertising, ask to see the calculation for the specific vehicle rather than treating the headline as a guaranteed saving.

Work through the relief without double counting

Consider an illustrative electric car with an assessed OMSP of €35,000 and a 7% VRT calculation. Before relief, that is €2,450. Where the full applicable relief offsets it, VRT payable becomes zero; the buyer does not receive the unused difference between €2,450 and the €5,000 ceiling.

Now suppose a dealer's final quote already reflects registration relief and an approved purchase grant. Subtracting either again would produce a fictitious price. Our SEAI purchase grant guide explains the separate purchase scheme. Ask for a clear invoice breakdown so you can compare offers using the same final on-road basis and the same included equipment.

Include annual motor tax as its own cost

The Department of Transport describes the annual motor tax for a fully electric vehicle as €120; see Department of Transport: benefits of switching to an EV. That is separate from VRT, which concerns registration, and from company car taxation. Check the vehicle's own tax details when preparing the actual ownership budget.

For a transparent comparison, use the tax due on the petrol or diesel car you are considering, rather than an assumed universal combustion-car amount. An illustrative €280 annual comparator against €120 would create a €160 difference. That is arithmetic based on a hypothetical comparator, not a statement that every petrol car is taxed at €280. Add the resulting difference once to your running-cost estimate.

Company car relief reduces the taxable valuation

Revenue's Revenue: company car exemptions and reductions lists a €20,000 electric-car reduction to Original Market Value for 2026, plus the applicable additional €10,000 reduction. The reductions taper in later years. Original Market Value for company car purposes is not the same concept as the VRT OMSP calculation, and the reduction is not money paid to the employee.

The Revenue: calculating company car taxable benefit describes the new zero-emission A1 category and the relevant business-kilometre bands. As an illustrative full-year calculation, a €50,000 OMV less €30,000 of applicable reductions leaves €20,000. At an assumed applicable 15% benefit percentage, that creates €3,000 of notional pay, not €3,000 of tax. Payroll must calculate the employee's actual Income Tax, USC and PRSI treatment.

Compare a private purchase with an employer offer

Ask an employer for a written payroll illustration identifying the car valuation, annual business kilometres, availability period and employee contributions. Distinguish the taxable benefit from any salary reduction or charge made by the employer. Changes to employment or annual mileage can make a simple online estimate a poor guide to the final position.

For a private car, compare acquisition cost less a realistic resale assumption with operating costs. For an employer arrangement, compare the full net-pay effect and included services over the same period. Add charging with the Irish energy-cost comparison and the charging cost tool. Confirm the tax-specific parts with Revenue or payroll before relying on the result for a binding financial commitment.
