SEAI Electric Car Grant Ireland 2026: Rules and Savings

Ireland offers support for qualifying electric vehicle purchases, but advertised grant totals can mix a current discount with tax relief or a closed scheme. This guide separates those amounts using official information checked on 10 September 2026. It focuses on a private passenger-car purchase in the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland uses UK arrangements, so buyers there should start with our UK grant guide.

Check the current private-car amount and price cap

The SEAI: electric vehicle grant amounts states a maximum €3,500 grant for qualifying new battery electric M1 passenger cars bought privately. It now lists a full-price eligibility range of €15,000 to €50,000, including extras and delivery before incentives. Do not rely on older pages mentioning a €60,000 passenger-car ceiling.

Start with SEAI: compare grant-eligible vehicles and request a written quote identifying the exact version. A vehicle family can include different batteries, trim levels and prices. Ask the dealer how the complete specification is treated under the current cap. An affordable base model does not establish that an optioned version remains eligible. Keep the undiscounted figure and each deduction separately visible.

The dealer applies on your behalf

An approved dealer submits the purchase grant application; this is not a reimbursement you independently request after buying any electric car. The SEAI: dealer grant scheme explains the participating-dealer scheme. Ask for confirmation of the application and the offer conditions relevant to your order before relying on the discount.

Check whether the advertised amount has already been deducted from the headline price. An illustrative €35,000 quote before a confirmed €3,500 grant becomes €31,500. If the displayed €31,500 already includes it, subtracting another €3,500 would understate the price. Keep the trade-in value and any manufacturer discount separate so they do not obscure what the government award actually contributes.

Scrappage headlines are not an open offer

The SEAI: ICE2EV pilot scrappage scheme status states that the ICE2EV pilot is closed to new applications after reaching its target. Its advertised €8,500 total comprised the ordinary €3,500 EV grant and an additional €5,000 scrappage amount; it was not €8,500 on top of the ordinary award. The standard purchase grant remains a separate route.

If you have an existing approved pilot application, use its offer conditions and the dealer's instructions. If you have no approval, do not budget for a reopening or dispose of your current vehicle in anticipation. Compare the actual trade-in and private-sale options available to you. Keep enough detail to distinguish a dealer-funded scrappage promotion from a government-funded scheme.

Used vehicles, taxis and vans need different checks

SEAI's private purchase grant is for qualifying new vehicles, not a general used-EV subsidy. A used car may still cost less overall; compare the final purchase price, condition, warranty and expected expenditure rather than rejecting it simply because no new-car grant applies. The model's charging suitability remains relevant either way.

For taxis, NTA: eSPSV26 scheme paused says the eSPSV26 scheme is paused and fully subscribed, with no current plan to reopen in 2026. Commercial vans and motorcycles have distinct categories and amounts listed by SEAI. A business vehicle is not automatically eligible for the private passenger-car award. Confirm the registration and application category before accepting any combined funding calculation.

Treat VRT and home charging separately

Vehicle Registration Tax relief is assessed under Revenue's rules, not by adding a fixed cash bonus to every order. Our Irish VRT and tax guide explains why the maximum relief and actual tax reduction are different. A dealer quote may already incorporate that relief.

Home charger support is also a separate application. Read the SEAI home charger grant guide before arranging installation. Set aside a charging budget even if the car qualifies for a purchase award. A lower vehicle invoice does not confirm that your parking, electricity supply or chosen charger meets the installation scheme's requirements.

Compare the full offer before committing

Collect two or three comparable quotations over the same ownership period. For each, record the deposit, monthly payments, term, interest, fees and any final payment. Ask what happens if delivery changes, the exact version changes or the grant cannot be applied. A verbal estimate of a future subsidy is weaker than a written confirmed order.

Then use our Irish EV versus petrol calculation with your expected kilometres and charging mix. Add insurance, tax and a realistic resale assumption or lease cost. The practical goal is a vehicle you can afford to buy and run under confirmed conditions. A smaller advertised incentive can accompany the better overall offer.
