For a Model 3 used on a daily commute, the useful home-charging question is how long it takes to replace the journeys you actually make. A full empty-to-full estimate often overstates the normal task. Check the domestic AC specification

Tesla's UK onboard-charger table lists Model 3 at up to 7.4kW on its single-phase arrangement and 11kW on the listed three-phase arrangements. Actual input depends on the supply, installed settings and operating conditions. A vehicle's DC rapid-charging peak is a different specification.

An 11kW AC capability does not mean a single-phase home automatically provides 11kW. Ask the installer to state the usable output in the quote and explain any load-management limit. For an imported or unusual variant, check its own documentation.

Turn your commute into a charging estimate

As a worked example, 50 miles at an assumed 4 miles/kWh consumes 12.5kWh of battery energy. With 90% assumed charging efficiency, restoring it draws about 13.9kWh. At a constant 7.4kW that is approximately 1.9 hours. These are example inputs, not a promise about Model 3 efficiency.

If you prefer a percentage-based calculation, first verify usable capacity for your exact version. Multiply capacity by the percentage change, expressed as a decimal, then account for charging losses. Do not use gross battery capacity or copy another variant's figure without checking.

Follow the recommendation displayed by the vehicle

Tesla says different installed batteries require different routines and directs owners to the recommended limit displayed on the charging screen. That is more appropriate than identifying battery chemistry from a badge and applying a blanket weekly 100% or daily 80% rule.

Keep the target appropriate to upcoming journeys and follow the current owner's guidance. Cabin preparation or battery conditioning can use electricity without appearing as an equivalent rise in displayed battery percentage. For the illustrative 13.9kWh top-up, 25p/kWh gives about £3.47 of electricity. This price is hypothetical and includes VAT for the example. Use your actual unit rate; add separate public charging or parking costs when calculating an entire week's motoring.

A cheap window can reduce the charging portion of the bill, but any increase in daytime household rates or standing charges also matters. For managed charging offers, confirm that the supplier supports your exact setup. A fixed timer and a supplier-controlled session are not interchangeable eligibility arrangements.

Choose a practical charging location

Measure the cable route with the car parked as it normally is, leaving slack and keeping pedestrian routes clear. Account for how the boot and doors are used. Compare the included cable and storage arrangement before choosing between tethered and socketed equipment.

A Tesla Wall Connector is one option; compatible third-party equipment can also be considered. Use the exact product's documentation for compatibility, access controls, connectivity and support. Avoid paying for a higher output that the supply or vehicle cannot use.

Check the first week of sessions
