Electric Car Grant UK 2026: Eligibility and Dealer Discounts

The UK Electric Car Grant can reduce the price of an approved new electric car, but the useful figure is the final amount you pay for the exact vehicle. A large headline discount does not establish eligibility for every version, or tell you whether finance and charging costs fit your budget. This guide, checked on 10 September 2026, explains the current routes and a practical way to compare written offers before ordering.

What the grant covers

OZEV's vehicle criteria describe a scheme for approved electric cars priced at £37,000 or below, with the grant band also depending on production sustainability criteria. It covers eligible registrations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, not the Crown dependencies. OZEV: Electric Car Grant criteria explains the detailed price and version rules.

That guidance is aimed at manufacturers seeking approval, not at a household submitting an individual claim. Your job as a buyer is to establish that the specific order qualifies. Ask the dealer to identify the approved version, the expected grant amount and what happens if the specification changes between the quotation and delivery. Keep the answer with the order confirmation.

Check the band for the exact version

The public list has maximum discounts of £3,750 for Band 1 and £1,500 for Band 2. At review it distinguishes, for example, the Renault 5 with a 52kWh battery from the 40kWh version. This illustrates why checking only a brand or model family can be misleading. Use OZEV: eligible cars and grant bands for the actual selection.

Avoid choosing a larger battery solely to obtain a bigger incentive. First decide how far you normally drive, where you can charge and whether the smaller version already meets that need. Ask for both versions on otherwise comparable terms. The relevant comparison is the difference in final price, monthly commitment and useful equipment after confirmed discounts.

Who applies and which paperwork matters

The seller handles the grant through the scheme. OZEV: Electric Car Grant portal rules also records a change from 17 July 2026: purchases registered to dealerships or manufacturers, including specified demonstration and employee arrangements, are no longer eligible. This does not mean every employer or leasing arrangement is automatically excluded.

Ask who will be the registered keeper and which transaction type is being used. If a salesperson calls a car pre-registered, demonstrator or salary sacrifice stock, ask for written confirmation of the applicable treatment. Do not assume a nearly new car has exactly the same grant route as an unregistered retail order. A vehicle can be attractive to buy even when it does not qualify.

Compare a discounted car using arithmetic

Consider two entirely illustrative cash offers. Car A costs £32,000 before a confirmed £3,750 award, leaving £28,250. Car B costs £28,500 before a confirmed £1,500 award, leaving £27,000. Car A has the larger subsidy, yet Car B is £1,250 cheaper to buy. These are examples, not current dealer prices or a claim that particular vehicles qualify.

Next add the equipment you actually need. If one quote includes a charging cable, installation contribution or servicing, put a separate value against it rather than treating an advertised bundle as cash. Ask whether paint, delivery, accessories and dealer charges are included. An identical comparison period and specification make the final difference meaningful.

Finance, trade-in and charging can reverse the ranking

For finance, record the deposit, number and amount of payments, interest rate, fees and any final payment needed to own the vehicle. Also record mileage limits and return conditions. Two monthly figures can look similar even when one agreement leaves a substantial final balance or has a much smaller annual mileage allowance.

Keep the trade-in valuation separate from the EV discount so you can see whether an attractive headline has been offset elsewhere. Then use our EV versus petrol worked comparison to test energy costs. If you will rely on public charging, use prices at places you can realistically visit instead of a cheap domestic tariff unavailable to you.

Make the order resilient to changes

Before signing, ask what happens if delivery is delayed, the vehicle specification changes or the assumed grant cannot be applied. Request the cancellation terms and final payable figure in writing. These are commercial questions to resolve with the seller, not promises that the grant administrator will pay any shortfall.

A charging grant is a separate decision with its own conditions. Our UK funding overview maps those routes. A company vehicle also needs the tax and salary sacrifice calculation. Keep all three worksheets together: acquisition, tax and charging. The best offer for you is the one whose verified costs fit your use, rather than the one displaying the largest government contribution.
